A breathtaking near-future thriller. From the NY Times bestselling author whose books have sold over a million copies.

When DARPA's billion-dollar program to create Artificial Superintelligence is sabotaged, US operative Cameron Carr is tasked with finding the culprit. He's been on high-stakes missions before, but this time the stakes are nothing less than the future of humanity. Because the race to evolve a superintelligent computer is on, and power players around the world will stop at nothing to get there first.

In the right hands, Artificial Superintelligence could lift humanity to towering heights. But in the wrong hands, this technology could represent the greatest threat humanity has ever seen . . .

Ripped from tomorrow's headlines, Infinity Born is a roller-coaster ride of a thriller that explores the deadly perils and mind-blowing possibilities that await the human race--including both extinction and immortality. As our phones and computers become ever smarter, Infinity Born takes an unblinking look at a technological tipping point that is just around the corner. One that will have a profound impact on the future course of human history.

This time I tried to read a Douglas E. Richards book slowly, taking a few evenings to savor every scene instead of tearing through it like I've done with all his previous books. But I just couldn't keep myself from speeding along as usual to find out what would happen next and from being unable to put the book down for any length of time. If you can refrain from doing that, you're a better man than I, Charlie Brown.
The excellent and extensive Amazon Review here describes much of the overall story, and I will only supplement it by briefly describing some other aspects. The book is about a military detective, Cameron Carr, who is tasked by the Secretary of Defense to hunt down an extraordinary genius, Isaac Jordan, who in 2020 has developed a technology for advanced, self-learning, self-aware computers that might achieve consciousness. Jordan's heinous crime is that he demolished an entire high-tech community and its inhabitants with a space weapon and then butchered his own family. One of Jordan's daughters survives and, along with Carr, is pursued by a deadly Russian operative. Stunningly, it turns out, Jordan might not have been the monster he so obviously appeared to have become; and Carr has second thoughts. I'll stop there so as not to be a spoiler. But I will add that there are truly fascinating matters regarding the transference of a human brain's content to a computer and the concomitant issues of individual human consciousness and soul, about which Richards presents some highly thought provoking material.
This book concerns the future of computers. However, considering all the other scientific and technological disciplines and their future evolution covered in other books by the author, which are listed at this Amazon webpage, it is inarguable that Douglas E. Richards is just flat-out brilliant.

Infinity Born Douglas E Richards 9781546406396 Books Reviews

I don't know how Douglas E. Richards does it. He routinely violates the rule about infodumps constantly and big league. Soemtimes, I think a good 30-40% of his books are infodumping. But here's the thing. I love his books. I read them cover to cover, including every word of every long, devoid of action infodump scene. Why? Because even the infodumps are fascinating. Yes, I wish he had a better way to convey the necessary info and keep things moving along, but the truth is that every word in every infodump is neeed in order to fully grasp the story. And I mean that not as a critique. He works hard to make his plots reasonably plausible, but pushes the reader to the very edge of the envelope. Every time I read one of his books, as I encounter another long infodump, I think to myself "oh no, not another infodump." Then, as I am reading said infodump, I find myself utterly fascinated with the explanations he is weaving, the science he is working hard to keep plausible, and the often bizarre plot turns and twists (and their inevitable seeming plot holes.) I have read plenty of really good science fiction by really great writers who seem to manage without the need for infodumps, though, truth be told, sometimes I find myself making notes and seeking explanations for things that were never quite explained to my satisfaction. Now, some mystery is good, but mystery and plausibility are closely intertwined, and when mystery becomes predominant, then we are in the realm of fantasy and not science fiction (and even the best fantasy writers endeavor to give their works reasonable plausibility, at least within the world they have created. In an afterword in the book, Richards opines as to why he hasn't yet written a far future epic. His argument, that depicting a future society that is essentially our current one moved to the future is not realistic, rings true. And perhaps, for an author who strives so hard to achieve plausibility, that could be a strong mental block against attempting to find a way to realistically portray a future society. The infodump required to assist a comtemporary reader at least reasonably comprehend a future human society which might be completely alien to our way of thinking would be immense - perhaps even impossible. A few good writers have mananaged to portray alien and future human societies that are totaly different constructs than our own contemporary society but only the very best of them are truly accessible to the average reader. (Think of the sci fi stories, novellas, novels, etc. you've read that just sort of dump you into a completely different world and consider what makes them or makes them not truly accessible. I've read very few that succeed.) But I digress. I do hope Richards takes a stab at a far future book sometime - I think he may actually be capable of it, but he may spend a decade or more trying to get it just right. In the meantime, I hope he doesn't get side-tracked in that (though it would be worth the wait) and continues to write fascinting, engaging, intellectually stimulating, and philosophically thoughtful stories.
This is a very captivating book, in my opinion, and I had a hard time puting it down for any length of time. I have always considered myself something of a futurist, and this book really gets the imagination going.....it also, however, wakes one up to the reality of all the AI that is going on about us now and that is to come, soon! (When I was in the middle of this book, I backed out of my garage to go to a tutoring job I have, thinking to check my phone for any messages at the bottom of my driveway. There, on the face of my phone, with no programming from me or calendar entry ~ nothing! ~ was the message "Time to San Ramon 38 minutes, traffic is light." Presumably my phone, "knowing" it was Tuesday, figured where I was going and gave me that heads-up. I took note of the time ~ 313 ~ and sure enough, pulled up to my job at 351) Richards' cautions, both in this novel and in data at the end of the book, are pretty hard to ignore.....but the tale he tells is well presented, with likable characters and great plot development. If you are a fan of sci-fi, Enjoy!
Wow! I know I say this after I read each of Douglas Richard's books, but this one has topped the list! I haven't even finished going through the part at the end describing what in the book was possible or could be possible, before wanting to come here to review this book. I do feel this book has gone a different direction than others, which I enjoyed. The author shows a extremely high knowledge of scientific advancement, which he has always done is his books, but also backs up each theory with recent studies and or well informed articles on each subject used in his book. I always find his grasp of the concepts used as amazing, even though I don't quite understand them myself! Coming from a family of scientists has given me an idea (barely) 😂, of the possibilities he describes as fact in his novels. He has outdone himself again! Thank you
Mr. Richards, for another great read. Now when did you say your next one is coming out?
